*eyes the ringing Morgoth Box on her hall table with a mixture of fear and disdain*

*remembers that Urwen is at school and Niënor is at one of her doctor's appointments*

*approaches the device warily, pencil in hand* *pokes the handset gingerly until it falls off the cradle*

*leans her head down until her mouth nears the earpiece* Cease your wailing, foe of the Valar!
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 08:35:55

*exasperatedly* It's just a telephone, Morwen. Other end. ... Other end.
From: [info]mavwin Date: 09/02/2007 08:37:23

*speaks into the other end* *shrilly* What phantom is this, who tries to deceive me using the voice of King Thingol??
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 08:38:34

This is King Thingol, you ninny. *cuts to the chase* Have you seen Túrin recently? I need to talk to him.
From: [info]mavwin Date: 09/02/2007 08:42:38

*sniffs as though insulted* No, sire, I haven't. So much for dutiful children. Really, he ought to get over my sending him away for the rest of his life. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

*tilts her head to move her ear closer to the handset* *conversationally* My new dress shop is doing wonderfully. Have you been?
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 08:43:44

*sighs* No, lady Morwen, I haven't seen it. Good luck with that.

*hangs up abruptly*
From: [info]mavwin Date: 09/02/2007 08:48:28

*listens for another minute, wondering if there's something to this odd device after all*

*finds her next-door neighbor's number written on a notepad, dials it, and proceeds to complain about disobedient children for a solid two hours*

*potters around in your secretary's office, looking at photographs and ornaments*
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 09:07:56

*stands in the doorway and stares*

*grinning* Finwë, you absolute bastard.
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 09:12:11

Oh, I'm the bastard, you wanker? I'm not the one who totally fucked up the road trip to Valinor.

*takes a few quick steps towards you and pulls you into a manly, manly embrace*
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 09:17:03

*can fully support manly, manly hugs, why yes*

*hugs!!*

*chuckles* You didn't see her. And I'm bloody glad of it on alternate Tuesdays. Come in, come in! Tea, Mardil.
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 09:19:31

*goes into your office with you and makes himself comfortable on a not-very-comfortable-looking seat*

*snorts* Well, I still ended up with two of 'em so on aggregate, I'm sure I must win. Oh, you've met Red from what she says? In fact, she says that you were charming?
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 09:29:02

*settles in a chair near you*

*loftily* I can be charming. Ask Melly. On second thought, definitely ask somebody other than Melly.

*stretches his legs comfortably* So what do you think of my little settlement here? Not too shabby, eh?
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 09:32:44

*looks around* Oh, it's a very nice establishment, I must say. *good-humouredly* I should have known you'd have done so well for yourself.

How is the wife? Family?
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 09:38:08

The wife is quite well. Maia-y. *smiles innocently* I did mention that my one wife's a Maia?

*thinking* My brother's trying rather unsuccessfully to relax, and my great-nephew is the most inquisitive thing you've ever seen. My new daughter niece and her daughter are getting ready to move, apparently, and-the-rest-we-don't-talk-about.

*glowering slightly* I know well enough how your lot is, I think.
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 09:46:07

*delightedly* How is Elmo? He always was a bit serious, wasn't he? *blinks, uncertainly* Don't you have a daughter too, no?

I know well enough how your lot is, I think.

*shakes his head* My lot? Well, I haven't disowned them yet so I'm not about to start now. Be frank. How bad was it?
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 09:52:45

"A bit serious"? *amusedly* Yes, and the Silmarils were a bit sparkly.

Don't you have a daughter too, no?

*conveniently ignores this*

How bad? Five of mine were injured, two critically. A whole building full of people were held hostage. And all this happened after they were given plenty of warning never to enter my realm. How bad would you say that is? Fingon seems unwilling to make a judgment on the matter. I have to wonder whether he's hoping I'll just forget about it if he stalls long enough.
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 10:00:23

*rolls his eyes* Quite. I should have told Curufinwë that we weren't having them in the house but I can never say no to him.

*conveniently ignores this*

*persists* No, you do, don't you? The stunningly pretty one or something? I've three girls too, you know. Obviously, I think they're lookers but I'm just their old dad so I have to be biased towards them. It seems to be a common theme among my offspring and their offspring and so on and so forth.

From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 13:40:38

*dispassionately* No, old friend. I no longer have a daughter. ...And weren't we just discussing your descendants' lawlessness? The grandchildren, that is. Not your daughters, who I'm sure are perfect angels.
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 15:17:08

*smiles brightly* Oh, they are perfect angels, to the best of my knowledge, although I will freely admit, if not in their hearing, that my knowledge is probably lacking in that respect.

*sighs a little* Yes, well, as for Curufinwë's sons. I daresay it would be too much to chalk their indiscretions up to youthful high spirits?
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 15:21:12

I daresay it would be too much

*wry smile* That's putting it mildly. *sobering* This isn't a social call then, is it, Finwë? Not by a long shot.
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 15:26:18

I'd rather it was a social call, in truth, but now that my first wife has gone so far as to bring these things to my attention, it seems that the words "quiet retirement" mean nothing at all.

*wistfully* Ossiriand is so nice and quiet.
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 15:29:50

*hands you a cup when the tea service arrives*

Ossiriand is so nice and quiet.

*easily enough* Then go back to your pleasant retirement. This needn't concern you.
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 15:34:51

*sighs* Oh, how I wish that were true but -- the fact is -- Míriel despises her descendants and if she is worried enough about what has happened, I suppose that I must be worried too, given how close I am -- or I was -- to Curufinwë and his boys.

*takes his tea cup* Thank you, Elwë.
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 15:38:05

*takes a sip of his own tea and shrugs* Suit yourself. I should warn you, though...it's not likely to be pretty. I demand justice and I can be awfully stubborn, as you well know.
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 15:42:10

*chuckles* Awfully stubborn? And what was that about the Silmarilli being a bit shiny?

*puts a lump of sugar in his tea and stirs* So. What is the ideal outcome of this situation, old friend?
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 15:48:45

Ideal? *calmly* I don't want to go to war much any more than you or Fingon do. I think I could be persuaded to settle for throwing the lot of them in prison for the rest of their natural lives.

*tilts his head and looks at you* So you see, I may be stubborn but I am also merciful.
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 15:54:40

Eru, that sounds like an awful waste of tax-payers' money, Elwë. What's wrong with a decent exile? That's what we used to do in my day.
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 15:58:11

*snorts* Exile? To some jewel of an isle with only scores of tanned, nubile, bikini-clad women to supply margaritas and other "services" round-the-clock, I expect? *eyeroll* Eru, what an ordeal.
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 16:02:24

Where is this island and why haven't I been informed about it? Have you been holding back on me, Elwë?

*rubs his face with one hand* How about exile and some sort of lifelong payment? Tribute, if you will? Some proportion of their earnings?
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 16:06:33

*appears highly offended* I don't think you understand, Finwë. Your grandchildren shot five of my marchwardens and endangered countless other people. They broke into my jail to liberate their brother! They were facing life sentences just for entering Doriath in the first place and you think you can buy me out?!
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 16:12:43

*shakes his head* I hardly want to buy you out. I couldn't possibly afford it. Everyone knows you are the power in Beleriand, even Rupert, who's the oldest inhabitant of the Alzheimer's wing.

*sighs* I don't want to undermine you or insult you but I don't want my grandsons to spend the rest of their days in jail. I don't want to think that they are beyond rehabilitation.
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 16:17:07

I don't want to think that they are beyond rehabilitation.

*incredulously* How much more Fëanorian chaos will it take to convince you, would you say?
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 16:23:06

*blandly* If losing Red didn't do it first time round, I can't imagine that there's much on Órë that will sway me.
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 16:28:37

*coolly* Then I'll advise you again not to get involved. I'm not interested in giving them a slap on the wrist. End of story.
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 16:35:50

*equally coolly* Then whatever punishment they receive, I will receive in their stead. They are young. I am not. And if you say that I am not worth five of my grandchildren, I will know you are lying.
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 16:38:24

*not unkindly* What would ever make you believe I'd agree to something so ridiculous, my friend? I have no quarrel with you. You who are easily worth five thousand of them.
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 16:47:57

*smiles* Careful, Elwë, or else my head will have expanded so much you won't get me out of this room, much less into a prison cell.
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 16:50:04

Perhaps if it does, you'll start making a lick of sense. This isn't a joke, Finwë. What are you playing at?
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 16:59:07

*frankly* Look, no one quite knows where the little shits have gotten to, isn't that right? And I'm willing to -- *waves his hand* -- take the fall? You can't possibly lose, Finwë, and I daresay that Red will be even more enamoured with you than before if you were to go so far as to throw away the key.
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 17:05:37

*angrily* I can't lose?? My best friend will be in prison and the criminals will continue to walk free. You're going to have to explain how this is in any way a satisfactory solution because I'm really not seeing it.
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 17:29:38

I rather hope that they might put their criminal ways behind them when they see the sacrifice their own grandfather has made on their behalf. Or else this will all be in vain.

*looks over at the tea service* Is there any more?
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 17:37:36

*not believing for a second that you'll go through with this ridiculous charade* *with a certain perverse curiosity* All right then. Sentencing for their crimes of the past few weeks will be temporarily suspended—until you change your mind, of course. The illegality of their entering Doriath will, of course, continue to hold.

Is there any more?

*blandly* Not for you. *stands and walks over to a window, hands clasped behind his back* Mardil will direct you to the jail.
From: [info] Date: 09/02/2007 17:40:15

Very well. *gets to his feet* Lovely to see you again, old chap. If Red happens to drop by, don't let on that I'm still in Delving. She might worry and Eru knows where that'll put us all.

*waits for Mardil*
From: [info]sindacollo Date: 09/02/2007 17:42:19

*with more than a touch of bitterness* You're a damned fool, Finwë.

*waits until you've gone before sending for Finrod*
